I feel like I’ve left a puppy without food or water for a month.
When I started this blog no one warned me about the unbelievable guilt you feel when, for one reason or another, work pulls so hard that you can’t find a moment to post. And, let it be said here, I really do feel guilty. Looking at 4 consecutive weeks of ‘Mind Slurry’ and absolutely zip else is somewhat depressing friends, I have to confess. Given that I’ve been ill for the last week, thankfully not with H1N1, even the last twitter feed was horribly light. During this phase of negligence, however, industry wise it’s been an absolute corker of a month hasn’t it? E3, apparently edging back to former glory if you were there, pumped out some stunning teasers, including ‘Drakes Fortune 2‘, which is looking superbly produced as one would expect; ‘The Last Guardian‘ which, honestly, is as good a reason to buy a console as I’ve ever seen - after all, one can never have too many games with wind sfx, cliff drops and weird green stone things; more on ‘Modern Warfare 2‘, guaranteed to be a thing of incredible gaming joy and currently being touted as a potential 11 million unit seller; Quantic Dream’s ‘Heavy Rain‘, looking just stunning, and then there were two motion controller announcements and a motion controller add-on launch. And so on and so on.
Post E3 it didn’t stop either, what with PEGI having now been given government endorsement as the ratings standard of choice for the UK; the re-thinking by the government of their position on tax-breaks to possibly bring us in-line with the movie industry, although how we’re going to go about tackling the culturally British thing remains an open question. And of course in somewhat industry related news, dear Apple went into overdrive with a flurry of announcements at the Worldwide Developers Conference including new MacBooks, more on SnowLeopard, iPhone OS 3.0, and of course the 3GS which as you certainly know is now for sale, which I have no good reason to buy which is as good a reason as any to buy it. Yes indeed, in the world of ‘lectronics all is good at the moment.
Despite the fact that posting’s been light, largely thanks to spending most of the daylight hours thinking about our very own ‘Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising‘, I have been using that commute to catch up on a stack of reading. I recommend all of the following, in fact, organised into some form of chronology from old enough to new enough but not too far in either direction:
1) ‘The Art of Innovation‘
2) ‘Thinkertoys‘
3) ‘Outliers‘
If you haven’t already you should read these. All different, all good. Enjoy. More soon.
