Flu Party

ebola_virus_em

The furore over H1N1 has kept me glued to the screen.  I’m normally a secret admirer of the power of the press to induce disproportionate responses to pretty much everything, but the use of the word pandemic in this context has been something special indeed.  Nevertheless, I wouldn’t go hunting out a dose of swine flu - I’ve had real flu several times in my life and it’s been deeply unpleasant each and every time.  Like a bad version of being drunk and hungover at the same time.  These days, at the first sign of a sniffle, I dose up on Echinacea and Berocca and hope for the very best.  So is this story from the beeb for real:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/8125191.stm

Whatever next?  Ebola excursions; Marburg whist drives; dengue fever discos.  Hey, there could be a business in this, no?  The world’s first Hotzone travel company.  You read it here first…….

This Week’s Mind Slurry (2009-06-27)

  • @cibber I bought three tubes of the German wart cream. No one makes wart cream like the Germans. #
  • @cibber Note, I’ve just discovered it’s not a great idea to Google image search ‘German Wart Cream’ in reply to cibber #
  • At a very enjoyable wedding. Lots of reggae and ska and drunken rum dancing. Alas, I am sober. Out if necessity rather than desire. #
  • Exceedingly sleepy after a day mountaineering. #
  • M6: Come the revolution, I have a special bullet reserved just for you. #
  • Homeward bound although it’s going to be a working evening for me. But not before the power of dinner. I need the power of dinner. #
  • Provincial train driver has just shouted “All Aboard” - he really has. Amazing. #
  • “As far as they’re concerned, the Kindle emerged directly from Satan’s mangina and will doom them all.” Quotes too good to keep to myself. #
  • @JancisRobinson In these hard times, Blue Nun and a range of Scottish lagers. in reply to JancisRobinson #
  • God bless R&R - off to Cornwall for five days with the family. #
  • Exeter. Nearly in Kernow. #

Abandonment or ‘That was the 4 weeks that was’

guilt2

I feel like I’ve left a puppy without food or water for a month.

When I started this blog no one warned me about the unbelievable guilt you feel when, for one reason or another, work pulls so hard that you can’t find a moment to post.  And, let it be said here, I really do feel guilty.  Looking at 4 consecutive weeks of ‘Mind Slurry’ and absolutely zip else is somewhat depressing friends, I have to confess.  Given that I’ve been ill for the last week, thankfully not with H1N1, even the last twitter feed was horribly light.  During this phase of negligence, however, industry wise it’s been an absolute corker of a month hasn’t it?  E3, apparently edging back to former glory if you were there, pumped out some stunning teasers, including ‘Drakes Fortune 2‘, which is looking superbly produced as one would expect; ‘The Last Guardian‘ which, honestly, is as good a reason to buy a console as I’ve ever seen - after all, one can never have too many games with wind sfx, cliff drops and weird green stone things; more on ‘Modern Warfare 2‘, guaranteed to be a thing of incredible gaming joy and currently being touted as a potential 11 million unit seller; Quantic Dream’s ‘Heavy Rain‘, looking just stunning, and then there were two motion controller announcements and a motion controller add-on launch.  And so on and so on.

Post E3 it didn’t stop either, what with PEGI having now been given government endorsement as the ratings standard of choice for the UK; the re-thinking by the government of their position on tax-breaks to possibly bring us in-line with the movie industry, although how we’re going to go about tackling the culturally British thing remains an open question.  And of course in somewhat industry related news, dear Apple went into overdrive with a flurry of announcements at the Worldwide Developers Conference including new MacBooks, more on SnowLeopard, iPhone OS 3.0, and of course the 3GS which as you certainly know is now for sale, which I have no good reason to buy which is as good a reason as any to buy it.  Yes indeed, in the world of ‘lectronics all is good at the moment.

Despite the fact that posting’s been light, largely thanks to spending most of the daylight hours thinking about our very own ‘Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising‘, I have been using that commute to catch up on a stack of reading.  I recommend all of the following, in fact, organised into some form of chronology from old enough to new enough but not too far in either direction:

1) ‘The Art of Innovation
2) ‘Thinkertoys
3) ‘Outliers

If you haven’t already you should read these.  All different, all good.  Enjoy.  More soon.
